Houston Strong

November 7, 2017

Exposed walls, barren of furniture, listening on radios because there was no longer a tv...this was the setting for many Houstonians during Game 7 of the World Series. The Astros proved that Houston is stronger than anyone ever imagined. Just two months after Hurricane Harvey dropped a devastating 51 inches of rain, the Astros beat the Dodgers, giving Houston a bit of reassurance that we will come back. We will rebuild. We will win.

Neighbors came together again; this time instead of ripping out drywall, they were sharing sodas and cheering alongside one another. There are no races, no politics, and certainly no negativity when a team as strong as the Astros are playing in the World Series. People simply want something to hope for, something to believe in.

The Astros did not disappoint. Many people suddenly became fans, not just of baseball, but of our hometeam. Houstonians rallied behind players like, Altuve, Springer, McCann, Verlander, Peacock and Correa. We watched as they hit, leaning on the edge of whatever seat we were perched upon and cheered in unison as they scored. Not once, but five times. The final score was 5 to 1.

At the end of the day, Houstonians still face piles of debris, insurance claims, and the aftermath of Harvey. It seems, however, a reverberating mantra of “If they can do it, so can we” echoes through the streets.

This is Houston. We are beautiful. We are strong. We are one.
