The Spirit of our Community: Katie Key, Director of Splendora ISD Education Foundation

When people think about supporting local schools, they often picture teachers, principals, and parents working together to help students succeed. But behind many of the innovative classroom experiences, hands-on learning opportunities, and community partnerships in Splendora ISD is a group making a lasting impact, the Splendora ISD Education Foundation.

Leading that effort is the Director, Katie Key, a woman whose passion for serving others has grown into a mission to connect an entire community with its school.

Thirteen years ago, Katie and her family moved to Splendora after hearing great things about the district. At the time, she was working in the music industry, but the long commute eventually led her to pursue a position within the school district. She began as the superintendent’s secretary and spent nearly eight years learning the heart of the district from the inside. When district leaders began looking for someone to help the Education Foundation grow beyond its volunteer roots, Katie was asked to consider the role.

Her first answer was “absolutely not.” Having previously served as an athletic booster club president while raising her son, she thought those days of volunteer leadership were behind her. But after giving it some thought, she agreed to help—and quickly discovered something she never expected. “I fell in love with helping our teachers,” she said.

That simple “yes” has grown into a full-time career dedicated to creating opportunities for educators and students alike.

Many people have heard of education foundations but aren’t exactly sure what they do. Katie explains it simply: the Foundation exists to bridge the gap between what school funding can provide and what teachers dream of providing for their students. As school budgets continue to tighten, teachers often have creative ideas that extend beyond basic classroom resources. Through grants funded by generous donors, the Foundation helps bring those ideas to life.

Whether it’s innovative learning tools, engaging classroom experiences, or specialized instructional materials, these grants give teachers the ability to create memorable learning opportunities that inspire students and enhance the curriculum.

The Foundation itself is a separate nonprofit organization that works alongside Splendora ISD, allowing it to raise private support while focusing solely on enriching education. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than $136,000 in innovative teaching grants, funding projects that directly impact classrooms across the district.

While financial contributions are certainly important, Katie is quick to point out that community involvement comes in many forms. One of her favorite examples is the district’s Incubator EDU entrepreneurship program. Local business owners volunteer their time to mentor high school juniors and seniors as they develop real business ideas. Students learn far more than how to sell a product, they gain practical experience in budgeting, payroll, marketing, customer service, and leadership from professionals who use those skills every day. It’s a partnership that benefits everyone involved, connecting students with the business community while preparing the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Businesses also play an essential role by sponsoring Foundation events, providing volunteer support, and helping offset program costs so that more resources can be directed into classrooms. And while the Foundation proudly serves Splendora ISD, Katie emphasizes that support doesn’t have to come only from businesses within the district. “As our community continues to grow, we’re reaching out across East Montgomery County,” she explains. “If a business has a heart for investing in students, we’d love to have that conversation.”

It’s this spirit of partnership that makes the Foundation unique. Every grant awarded, every mentor who volunteers, every sponsorship secured represents neighbors investing in the future of their own community.

Looking ahead, one of the Foundation’s biggest events returns this fall. Men Who Cook will be held on October 24 at The Nathaniel Center in Kingwood. The popular fundraiser features local chef teams serving signature dishes while guests vote for their favorites, enjoy a lively auction, and help raise funds that directly support teachers and students throughout Splendora ISD. After outgrowing its previous venue, this year’s move reflects just how much community support continues to grow.

At its heart, the Splendora ISD Education Foundation is about far more than fundraising. It’s about neighbors investing in neighbors. It’s about teachers who dream bigger for their classrooms, businesses willing to share their expertise, and a community that believes every child deserves opportunities to learn, create, and succeed.

Because when a community invests in its students, everyone benefits, and that’s truly the spirit of our community.
