The Spirit of our Community: Danell Fields, A Life of Faith, Family, and Service
Danell Fields has spent a lifetime bringing people together and making a difference in the community she calls home.
Some people leave their mark on a community through their careers. Others through volunteer work, leadership, or simply being there when someone needs a helping hand. For Danell Fields, it has always been a little bit of everything. But behind her many accomplishments, awards, and years of community involvement is something far more meaningful, a deep faith in God, a love for family, and a genuine desire to make life better for those around her.
Danell’s story begins with a blessing her parents never expected. Her father, a disabled veteran, and her mother had been told they might never have children. When their daughter arrived, they combined their names, Dan and Nell, to create Danell. It was a fitting beginning for a woman whose life would be filled with unexpected opportunities, meaningful connections, and a heart for others.
Growing up in Victoria, Texas, Danell discovered her passion for helping people early. While serving on her high school’s student council, she helped establish a program connecting students with residents of local retirement communities. Students would visit their adopted seniors, spend time together, and occasionally take them out for ice cream. What seemed like a simple gesture became one of Danell’s first lessons in the difference a little kindness can make.
That desire to serve followed her into adulthood, but it was after moving to the Humble area and marrying into the Fields family that her understanding of community involvement truly began to grow. Her father-in-law, Jack Fields, who served on the local school board, introduced her to organizations, events, and people who were working to strengthen the community. Through him, she discovered that public service was about much more than attending meetings or fundraisers. It was about listening, connecting people with resources, and finding solutions that could genuinely change lives.
One of her earliest opportunities came in the early 1990s when former Humble Mayor McKay asked her to chair a fundraising gala for Northeast Hospital. Danell had never organized an event of that magnitude, but she wasn’t one to shy away from a challenge. With determination, creativity, and the support of a dedicated committee, she decided to do something no one had attempted locally before, bring legendary entertainer Bob Hope to the event.
It was an ambitious undertaking, particularly for a small community fundraiser. But Danell believed they could make it happen, and they did. The gala became a memorable success, helping raise significant funds for the hospital and paving the way for future events featuring other well-known entertainers, including Wayne Newton. More importantly, it showed Danell what could happen when people came together with a shared purpose.
Over the years, that same spirit has carried into nearly every part of her life. From her work with Rosewood Funeral Homes and Cemeteries to owning Danell’s Gifts and Florals, teaching at Lone Star College, working in travel, and building a career in real estate, Danell has always found herself in professions centered around people. Whether helping a family through a difficult loss, creating a beautiful celebration, mentoring students, or helping someone find the right property, building relationships has remained at the heart of what she does.
Her commitment to the community has been just as extensive. Danell has served in leadership and volunteer roles with organizations including Humble Area Assistance Ministries (HAAM), the YMCA, FamilyTime, the American Heart Association, Humble ISD Education Foundation, and New Caney ISD Education Foundation, among others. She was also the founder of “Principal of the Day” for East Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. Her dedication has earned numerous honors, including the HAAM Pillar of the Community Award, volunteer recognition from the YMCA and American Heart Association, and most recently, the prestigious ATHENA International Women’s Award.
Yet when asked about her awards, Danell is quick to shift the attention away from herself. She believes meaningful change is never the work of one individual, but the result of many people joining together.
That belief also inspired her to create Stilettos, a women’s empowerment group she founded following a difficult season in her own life. Wanting to provide a positive place where women could encourage one another, share experiences, and celebrate personal and professional accomplishments, Danell organized monthly gatherings for several years. Although the regular meetings ended around the pandemic, the spirit of the group continues through an annual holiday effort supporting children served by HAAM.
Today, Danell continues finding new ways to serve. She works full-time as Director of Constituent Services for Houston City Council Member Twila Carter, At-Large Position 3, helping connect residents with information, assistance, and resources. She also remains involved in commercial real estate and recently returned to one of her creative passions with Fields and Parks, a business specializing in events, floral arrangements, and seasonal décor.
But for all the roles she has held and the recognition she has received, Danell is clear about what matters most. Her faith in God comes first, followed closely by her family. As a mother to two boys, Jess Jr. and Jay, and grandmother, she treasures the time spent with her children and grandchildren, who remain among her greatest joys. Through life’s celebrations, challenges, and unexpected changes, it is her faith and the love of family that have given her strength to keep moving forward.
And perhaps that is what makes Danell’s story so meaningful. Her life hasn’t simply been about professional success or community recognition. It has been about using the gifts and opportunities God has given her to encourage others, build relationships, and make a difference wherever she can.
Her advice to others is simple, “Serve and do whatever your heart tugs you to do.” She reminds us that making a difference doesn’t always require a grand gesture. Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness, encouragement, or generosity can have the greatest impact.
After nearly four decades in the Humble area, Danell continues to believe in the power of community. She knows firsthand that no one accomplishes anything meaningful alone. It takes neighbors helping neighbors, organizations working together, and individuals willing to give a little of themselves for the good of others.
And through it all, Danell remains guided by the values that have shaped her life from the beginning: faith, family, perseverance, and a heart for serving others.
